"ebrake ratcheting assembly" - what years compatible?

"ebrake ratcheting assembly" - what years compatible?
mechanic sez this assembly is shot (sez it's a fairly common Ford thing), resulting in no parking brake (been this way since purchased van 1.5 yrs ago)
The replacement part from Dealer is $367
seems like something can get from wreckers, especially if newer fords use the same part (I have 1992 E150 Chateau)
As I would prefer to pull this (if possible) from a newer vehicle, does anyone know what years (or other trucks) would use the identical assembly?
and/or does anyone have comments on this particular repair? is it hard, or ok for a somewhat inept home handyman?
