Well, I have a little bit of milky substance on the tip of my oil pan plug, the antifreeze level in the reservoir is going down gradually, and after driving 25 miles at 50-60mph, it smells like hot antifreeze... The exhaust smells fine, but near the engine it smells like hot antifreeze after being turned off... Its a 1994 4.0 ranger.. I am starting to think head gasket, the mechanic I talked to siad that migh tbe the problem.. I don't have tie to do it my self, so it might cost around $600-$700.. ouch..
Intake gasket failures (ie, leakage) on the OHV 4.0 are far more frequent than head gasket failures (very infrequent). They're cheaper to repair too. Your mechanics choice of words were slick; he used *might*.
*I would retorque the lower intake bolts before doing anything else (a freebie). Change oil too and monitor coolant usage. Early/mid production life 4.0's are famous for the lower intake bolts comming loose over time.
