hello all. im just wondering about my temp gauge accuracy. i mean i know they are bad but i put cardboard in front of the rad in the winter time and kinda forgot about it till now. but the temp gauge has not moved from normal at all. in other vehicles that i have owned it would start to rise to hot but not this one. just normal. anyone else have this? i am going to now order a autometer a pillar mount gauge set because of this.
Ford guages are basically idiot lights with needles. The go up to a certain mark as long as the values (really WIDE values) are there. Most agree that by the time the guages show red you already have problems you can see or feel and the guages just remind you of that.
I would suspect it is cheaper to build 'em that way and it may reduce warranty "challenges" by unknowing or ill-informed customers who think there's a problem when there really isn't.
Here's my example of the uselessness of these guages: (I'm sure it happens to everyone, too) I can start my truck and idle it for 5-7 minutes and the tranny temp guage will be in "normal" range! Just how in the world the fluid got warm is beyond me...
Anytime the engine is running the torque converter is turning, and the pump is creating pressure. The shearing of the fluid by both the torque converter and pump will warm the trans fluid, even in park or neutral.
Having said that, anytime the trans is between about 50°F and 230°F the trans gauge will read in the same place.
