last fall i was going to school in Virginia, and one fall day i went out for a drive. out in the middle of nowhere at a garage sale i found two trucks, a 1974 full-size f100 with a straight six and three on the tree, and a 1969 f100 shortbox with a 390 and three on the tree as well (both two-wheelers). Ever since that day when i didn't have enough money (being in school and all) i've wanted at least a picture or a truck like that shortbox, just for future reference does ANYONE know of or have pictures of a truck like that they could post/email? i would be highly appreciative.
If you look through some of the posts, you will see small photos on the left, these may link you to a gallery. Surf around and you will find some pictures of these trucks. Both of mine have long beds.
My daily driver is a shortbed styleside. I could e-mail a picture, if you wish.
It's ugly; no new paint (original blue '67 cab and white? '70 bed). And it might be a bit confusing, too. It started life as a 1970 styleside with I-6 and three/tree. I immediately put in power steering, power brakes, a 429/C-6 combo, a second fuel tank under the bed in place of the spare tire, and other "necessary" items (stereo, tires/rims, etc.). I have a 'lead foot', and eventually removed the 429/C-6 and put in a 390/T-18. At that time, I pulled the white '70 cab/front clip and installed the blue '67 cab/front clip.
All that said, a side view showing the cab, front fender, and bed would give you a good idea of what the 1967 - 1972 F100 shortbed looks like (with minor variations).
Let me know if you want a picture and I'll run out and take one from the side and e-mail it to you. If you wish, you can e-mail me at market@zianet.com
The 390 has tremendous torque; especially since I still have the 4:11 gears in it that I was running with the 429/C-6. The T-18 is just the old (read Ford original) 4-speed ('granny' 1st).
I run out of revs real quick with this combo, so I'm not so prone to 'lead-foot' it.
Gas maileage, what gas mileage. The words 390 and gas mileage do not belong in the same sentence (IMHO). The best I ever got with any of the 390's I have owned was in a 1972 short-wide with a T-18 and 3:25 gears. And that was only 14 mpg for one gas tank full.
Originally designed for trucks, the 390 (based on the original 332 c.i.) was intended to haul a load, back when gasoline was $0.15/gallon. Mine coughs every time I pass a gas station, just to remind me who is in control.
OldFords (What happened to my favorite emotion icon?)
Thanks for the input on the mileage Old Fords. I really like the idea of some torque after driving a dodge with a 318 for the last 3 years. To tell you the truth i never got more than about 15 with that either. I keep wondering what the gearing from a newer 5 speed would do for the mileage of the 390 and maybe have torque too:7 . One can only dream...
P.S. I'm in Canada where right now we're paying about 73 cents per litre for regular gas(about $3.30 per gallon by my calculation?)-------YUCK!
