Rear end trouble

After the smoke clears about my backside, I need some suggestions. I am having to rebuild the center chunk in my 94.5, 5 speed. It currently has the 4.10 Limited Slip. I am considering changing to a lower ratio (better milage) gear. Could I get some reccomendations or suggestions. I was thinking about a 3.55. I tow a travel trailer about 6500#, not much more than that on a regular basis. Thanks for the advice this has been a real pain in the rear. It got hot enough to burn the gear oil 400 miles from home, boy that stuff stinks.

I know about the stinch. I thought I was gonna puke when I changed mine. I went to synthetic. Maybe it won't smell so bad next time.

I know at a machine shop I use to work at used to use dino based coolant/cutting oil for their saws and such. Man, it smelled like dead animals in that place all the time. About 3 months after they switched to synthetic The oder was gone. Dead dinosaurs smell very much bad.

I don't think you will go wrong with 3.55s if you are just pulling 6500#.

does anyone have 3.73's. realizing I will lose some pulling power, how much should I be able to pull with 3.55. Will 6500# be about the max.

it's the friction modifier that makes it really smell bad. I hate when they do rear ends around here. Place smells for hours.

Question

Should I be cautious about 3.55's. Am I giving up to much pulling power for a couple of mpg. From time to tome I pull a concert stage for a family business, mostly around town (or neighboring cities). The staging weighs in between 6-10,000 depending on venue/event. Maybe I am putting to much into this, but I hate to make an uneducated decision. I recently replace my flywheel for a single mass after havin the infamous shutter at idle. I took the oppotunity to put on a 3" downpipe since the previous owner killed the cat. Was ready to work on better intake breathing until this gear problem. I guess after the mods I have made and plan to make I don't want to take a step back.

3.55's will give you a killer highway gear, but if you have not killed the governor, you will still die out at about 94 mph, not counting making you use more of the lower gears if you hit a hill and especially around in town. With standard tires, I would use the 3.73's. They seem to be the best of both worlds, fairly good cruising speed and towing.
