Distibutor Replacment

Does anyone have a good tip/trick to let me in on. I am rebuilding a 302 to put in my 83 F100SB. What is good method to get a decent timing setting when replacing distributor. Then I can at least get it fired to set the timing.

ok, if the timing is weird then here's how to do it. Take out the number one spark plug, if you can see down the hole then more power to ya, if not then stick your finger over the hole, and have a buddy bump the starter untill it blows your finger out of the hole. This is pretty violent so use some sense, don't wedge your finger in there or anything, just enough to feel the compression. I don't want to be responsible for you're being nicknamed nubby. Once the engine has number one on top dead center of the compression stroke then rotate the rotor to point at number one and slide her in (correctly oriented of course). This should get you close enough to get her to start.

Another way to do it is to mark where the vacuum advance is pointing by using a sharpie or tape and making a line under the advance on the block. Take the cap off and note where the rotor is pointing and take it out. When you put the new one in, just orient the vacuum advance unit over the line on the block and point the rotor the same way it came out and you should be close.
But, amish77's way of doing it is ok as well, just do it the way you feel more comfortable with.

you can also use a wrench if you have a way to get into the engine compartment and rotate it with it while your buddy or you has their finger in there, however you might have to do a lot of force.....i did that to my boat's chevy 3500 engine
