Started my bronco II up today, and was seeing the reaction time of the intake....doing this in sort bursts of WOT. Well for some reason the trottle stuck at WOT and was bouncing off the rev-limter for about 5 seconds before i ran in the truck to kill it. De-greased the trottle and that dont stik anymore. Rev limter seems to bounce at 6,500 which is deep in the red, only 500 from the last number on the tach.
Could there have been engine damage done to my engine from this???? Its a 1987.
I believe the 2.9 is an interference motor. If the thing was bouncing due to the valves hitting the pistons and that slowing it back down then you'll have your damage question answered soon enough. I'd think that the fact that it's running means that you're fine. A compression check would rule most of the problems out. If valves got bent then they won't seal and you'll have your answer.
Yes, the 2.9's do have a rev limiter on them.... but the computer can be reprogrammed to remove that -- or you can get a chip that will "remove" it. What you experienced was the computer shutting off/on fuel and turning on/off spark. It's always best to clean up the throttle body / intake plenum and re-lube the throttle linkage, etc.
