Oil Leak

I have a 88 BII with the 2.9l engine. There is a oil leak on the passenger side.
All of the gaskets are intact and dry on the outside. It looks like may be coming
from the right angle adapter for the oil filter. Has anyone else had this problem,
and/or fixed it? Thanks for any help.

> from the right angle adapter for the oil filter

I thought it was on the left hand driver's side. Anyways, what might have happened is the stud the oil filter screws onto has become loose from the filter being screwed on too tight. It just looks like it is coming from the adapter (I thought BIIs were a straight screw on?). Anyways, what you do is remove the oil filter and screw the hollow stud back in tightly with a strap. Because of the oil lock-tite and such will not work.

Are you sure its a leak at the bottom of the motor???

I though mine was leaking from the crankcase, but it turned out to be the valve covers leaking, and the oil went down the side of the block.

Also im sure the 2.9 is know for leaking valve covers....so it may well be that in your case too.

Also, as you said you checked all the gaskets, most of the oil leaking from the valve cover burns off at the manifold....so when its cold it would seem as if it wasnt leaking at all.

This engine has an adapter on the passenger side, one end bolts onto the block,
and the other end is the mating surface for the oil filter, with the filter threading
onto the adapter. The oil filter is mounted with the closed end pointing straight down. The filter itself does not leak, but there is a run of oil coming straight
down from the area where this adapter mounts on the block. I've seen one of
these oem adapters on ebay and it looks like it mounts on the block in the same
way a filter would mount. I was wondering if anyone had this to leak, and how
to correct it. Thanks for the responses so far.

Take it off and see if the gasket is messed up in anyway....that the only thing between the block and adapter, and un-less the adapter or block has a fualt in it, your gasket it definalty the cuase of it

I had this problem with a rebuild i did a few years ago. Turned over engine oil leaked everywhere. There was a coper gasket inbetween adapter and engine block. I dont like the disign but beggers cant be choicers. I kept tightening the nut but each time i had to take of the pass side header, eventually i got a torch and bent a box end wrench to the right angle and after a few more torqes with my new wrench it quit leaking and i never had problems again. never did replace gasket just tightened the hell out of it. Goodluck with your repair.

As long as the gasket set you have comes with rubber valve cover and oilpan gaskets and you use the proper stuff with them, you're good to go. Cork gaskets tend to harden and crack, or get cut if you mess up and overtorque your bolts during installation - unless you put the right sealant on BOTH sides of the gasket, and even then, it's a crap shoot, IMO. I'm not sure about that particular gasket, you may have to ask the parts store.

I think I am going to check my adapter during the next oil change - as well as clean and/or replace my pan/gasket on the lower end. If after all I've done, there are still leaks, then the front and rear mains are at fault

I've been hunting up the gaskets/seals for the adapter. Four stores, and then
the dealer. I feel like I invented the adapter, having to explain it so many times.
Ford apparently redesigned it and then discontinued stocking it, or either of the
sets of parts for either type. To be continued.

The gaskets are special order items from Autozone. You can find them on their website. Things are getting dry underneath now. Good Luck.

I've also found Greased Lightning spray to be a good cleaner for oil messes.
