Why does Oil always drip from around the bell housing??? Could i have a crack in the block or a bad seal or sumthing? The bolts were kinda loose around the bell ousing when i got the truck, so i tighteed them up a lil to see if the oil would stop dripping, but it hasnt. If it is the seal, how hard is it to replace that??
Probably is the rear main seal, seems to be a common problem on these motors. In order to get to it, you have to pull the trans down and take the flywheel off, as it is a one piece seal.
Shouldnt that rear main seal be replaced by a tranny shop after they rebuild a tranny? I ask because Im loosing lots of oil and seem to have started after the tranny work was done. Maybe I should have requested it be replaced? How difficult of a job am I looking at?

Reason: Need to add on
Tranny shops usualyy deal with just the trans, not too often do they just take care of a rear main on the motor.Different operation, different parts. What may have happened for you was that there was enough dirt and such holding the oil in that it didn't seem to be loosing it before they worked on it. Had that happen on an old Mustang once, when the clutch started slipping, I did some checking, and that was what happened to it, a lot of oil came out when I pryed the dust cover away from the trans bell housing.
When I pulled my fifth wheel for the first time since I bought my truck, I thought the clutch or pressure plate was shot, turns out it was oil from the back seal, I put in some gasket sealer, not as bad now.
First you must find where the leak is coming from, that could be from the Oil pressure sender on the upper back of the block. Any oil on the valley pan would eventually run back and down to the bellhousing area. Also there are oil gallery plugs on the rear of the block behind the flywheel and of course the rear seal. If the trans was repaired did they touch the flywheel.....the retaining bolts on the flywheel to crank require a liquid thread sealant.
So as you see there are several area to check out first before dropping the trans.
Plc, where is the oil pressure sender. There seems to be a lot of oil underneath the bell housing, and its all over everything. Its not a massive ammount of oil I dont think, it only starts to drip after long periods of driving i guess when the oil is really Hot. how hard would it be to drop the tranny? would i need any special tools? I have a 3 ton jack that i could jack it up with and pull it out, would that work or would i need one of those stupid tranny jacks?

I had a similar problem .... check the top of your enging down between the valve covers. I had to have the injector oil pump replaced. I noticed oil building up on the top of the motor and then running down the back ....
the oil could be coming from the oil pressure sending unit ... rear top center of the block behind the air cleaner. Could also be fuel mixing with dirt from the valley pan from injector leakage or injection pump weep hole. You would have to clean the engine off and watch for the source.
