Well...what do I do now!

First, I'm a somewhat novice so this is of my own making. I have a 73 302 block, stock heads - all that is fine. Valves...that's were I go wrong. I have the heads machined for 1.9/1.6 - bought manley budget race flow and wham! I have rail type roller rockers and these have short tips. What do I do? It looks like to me that I can spend more money on different valves (manley's rail type valves of course come in 1.94 so I'd have to have the head remachined). I can machine the heads for studs/guide plates and buy new rollers as well as hardened pushrods or what else am I leaving out? Is there spring retainers that maybe have a recessed head that the rails can clear? Can the rails on the rockers be machined down a bit to clear?

I understand that some of these are good options to be done..if it weren't for trying to stick to a pretty set budget.

thanks

The simple solution...valve lash caps.

Otherwise I'd go the screw-in stud/guideplate conversion, although that's not the cheapest route.

That's awesome - thanks TigerDan. I fully expect that this engine will be replaced as we keep modifing the truck. This is an education project for my 16 year old son. The schools here teach nothing and it's a career path he want to go into so building our own truck and feeling the pain of the pitfalls is a good education. He/we are building a 73 F100 longbed - 302 stroked to 331 running a 500 lift Compcams - should be about 325Hp/350 Tq or so. Budget engine for the most part but a good learning tool. This happens to be my messup and thinking/researching larger valves before diagramming the whole valve train and how it would all work together. Thanks for the insite.

Now that I think about it, I believe there are also special notched lash caps made just for rail rockers as I believe the ones I linked to above are too wide ti fit between the rails. Let me know if you can't find them and I'll see what I can come up with.
