Is it worth it to do anything to a stock head off of a EFI V8?? I have a 351 in a 94 I want more power, and better gas mileage out of my truck. If it is worth it how should go about it, and get good gas mileage. I was going to use 302 EFI heads that way there is minimal downtime, I hear all I have to do is drill the head bolts holes to 1/2 inch. By the way I still want to keep my bottom end but would settle for less if it broadens my torque curve out.
You already have E7TE heads, which are okay as far as stock factory heads go but there's room for improvement. You can port them for mild gains but it may not really be worth the hassle if you're doing nothing else. Check this link out.
Another option might be GT-40 heads, a bit better then the E7's.
Your time and money would be better spent on bolt-on parts if you haven't done so already: headers, exhaust, CIA and bump the timing up a couple of degrees.
Also, I tend to stay away from using "better gas milage" when refering to a 351, they just don't belong in the same sentance.
i agree with matt here. the exhaust is the biggest bottleneck on our rigs. you replace the stock manifolds, y pipe and the rest of the exhaust and it will help in some power gains and mpg as well. a good set of headers like gibson, jba, edelbrock, bbk and bassani would do great, then look into the bassani Y pipe with hiflow cats, then have a muffler shop go with 3" exhaust with your choice of muffler out stock location. great sound and better performance. if you bump the timing, look into an msd coil and enlarge the spark plug gap to .55.
Whats better about the Gt40 heads than the E7s? and maybe someone can also enlighten me about the diff between GT40p and GT40 heads, maybe with casting numbers to boot.
Looking into upgrading my heads ON THE CHEAP on my 83 351W and the E& are about 1/2 the price.
