06 E-350 speed limiter

Hey Folks,
I know you guys have probably answered this question a hundred times but I couldn't find it with the search.. Anyway, did Ford lower the speed limiter down to 85 on the new 06 E-350's. My buddy says his new van just won't go past 85.

Thanks for the info....

I doubt its speed limited to 85 mph. My limiter is set at 98 mph. When you hit it its obvious. You get a noticable ignition interuption. It acts like a very bad hard miss. If the van just quits accelerating at 85 and there is no noticable miss, that's not the limiter, its most likely just lack of power.

Most vehicle manufacturers set the speed limiter based on the speed rating of the OE tires. Ford could have lowered the limiter based on the publicity of the Econoline rollovers but it would be very noticable if you actually hit the limiter.

I know what your saying about the miss, my 05 f-250 will hit that wall at 98 mph. But his van has hard acceleration all the way to 85 and just stops there with no miss, back off to about 80 and mash the pedal again and it takes off quick until you hit 85 again..

It has the 5.4 and I'm not sure about gears.......I'm guessing 4:10 in it since it's heavy duty.

Well, I guess its possible that Ford decided to do something a little less obvious as a speed limiter. Perhaps they drop the ignition advance to zero at 85 mph so it won't go any faster. Retarding the ignition timing would be a very easy and subtle way to limit top speed without using the obvious hard speed limiter.

The problem with that is retarding the timing makes for VERY high exhaust temperatures. The catalyst would melt the first time this happened.
