Any sparkies out there? Got a small puzzle to solve. I had a HEI/coil/ Dist. combo built for my 300I6VAN85. I got switched 12V power from the fuse box. The ground looks good from the bracket back to the motor. I mounted the assy on the fender. The problem is I only see spark at the plug when I turn off the ignition switch after cranking the motor over. I did get a nice back fire thru the brand new 390 4bbl carb!
I guess I need to check the wires on the HEI module. Maybe they got knocked ascrew at install. Don't think so. I don't really want to start ripping the nice wire harness apart if it's some e-z step that I have overlooked. It's Sunday and I can't contact the assy builders. So close to firing up this up date.
If I understand, You are getting "switched power" from the fuse block? I this for both start and run positions on the switch?
In the fuse block you may loose too much power in starting!
Is your coil an aftermarket high discharge type?
If not you need to change!
Have you checked your wiring?
I had to do a second check!
I had a heck of a time trying to find a good switched hot wire to feed the coil. I took the steering wheel off looking for a wire. Nota. The ingition switch is activated by a push rod at the base of the steering column, in a hard to get to area. I finially tapped into a large switched wire that feeds the fuse box and put in a inline fuse. The coil is not aftermarket. The motor cranks over plenty fast. I guess I could do a test and take a hot wire right off the battery to feed the coil. Thanks for the reply.
The think the Dist reman said the coil was good for 50,000v. The hot wire I have to the coil is for run mode from the switch....... Whoa. Are you trying to tell me I might not have power to the coil when I crank the motor over? I know some motorcycles cut the power off to lights, for example, when you are cranking the starter motor. I got to look at that. Thanks
Whoa Yea. I did a quick test, and I see what is probably wrong. I ran a test light from my hot from the back of the fuse box, turned the ignition switch on, which lit the light. When I cranked the starter motor, the test light went out.
Thank, you made my day.
Great, sort of. I still need a hot to the coil. I guess I could use the hot that fed the old computor. I have that going to the electric choke. I could test that line e-z.
Where is the best place to find power to feed the coil?
One HAPPY CAMPER here. Got the motor fired up ! Thanks dog man. I ran the hot from the old wire that fed the computor. That was the ticket. Got to tie down some wire and take it for a spin.
The best thing is no more black soot smoke from the exhaust pipe. She is running clean and it's not even dialed in yet. YEEE HAAAAA.
Thanks again dog man. Look for some pictures and lessons learned from this project named Clifford/Holley Transplant III comming to a pc near you.
This has been a great find of a web site. I feel I have to give something back and will do my best to share what I have learned.
Now to tie down those wire and go for a ride......
