OK gang, I'm in need of suggestions, as my Contis are getting pretty thin. I would like those who've gone to non-OEM tires to respond, and let's leave off the debate about load ranges, weight capacity, etc. Just tell me what you went with and how you like them...
The vehicle: 2005 F350SD, PSD, CC, 4x4, XLT Sport
Wheels: Factory 18" wheels, 275/70/R18
I do NOT want to buy different wheels at this point.
I'm looking for something that's a fair bit more aggressive than the Contis, but I don't want to go as serious as mud tires. Something on the order of a BFG AT K/O would be about right... unfortunately, they don't seem to offer one in the right size and load range. Noise on highways/city streets is somewhat important. The most off-roading I do is getting into and out of fire scenes (structures, grass fires, etc.) out in the rural parts of the county.
tvsjr, Outta curiosity how many miles have you gotten out of your Coniticraps. Secondly, how many more miles do you think you have left? And last, how often do you rotate tires? I have 27,000 on my Conti's and I seem to be doing fairly well, rotating every 5,000. I'm honestly hoping Michelin will have the LTX/MS or ATX/MS with Load E rating available when I'm ready. If not my next 2 choices would be a BF Goodrich Rugged Trail T/A and Goodyear Wrangler AT/S. For some resaon though I never get good milleage with Goodyear. 40,000 and they're toast. Also I here Toyo makes a nice tire. Thank you for your info.
I work at a Ford dealer and we've installed a few Cooper Discoverer 35x12.50R18LT's. I was surprised that the 35's fit ok. They don't seem to ride too bad but are a bit noisy compared to the stock tires. Apparently they were pretty hard to balance. They do look pretty good....quite aggressive.
Wiingnut - I've got about 18.6K on them, and I'd anticipate less than 5K to go. They've been rotated and balanced every 5K. I'm with you on the Michelins, but I'm not sure if that will happen any time soon. Personally, Michelins are my favorite. I'm not too sure about Goodyear - I had a set of Wrangler RT/S on my Expedition and could *not* keep the things balanced.
Racer - I'm not a fan of Cooper. They shafted a friend of mine when a complete set of 4 suffered tread separation.
18.6K I pulled my 18" Contis off around 12K and they don't even look like they have been used. Are you doing smokey burnouts at every light? Seriously, that is not good mileage if you ask me. I was thinking more like 50 or 60K
I run the Nitto Terra Grapplers A/T's The best tire I've ever owned, IMO. Very quiet on the road & great traction. I've got over 13,000 miles on them now with 1 rotation done and the next coming soon, They still look like new!
I have the Goodyear Wranglers and am happy with them. Only 3000 miles on them so far. Much better in the snow than the Contis. Contis only had 11,000 miles on them and looked new.
Az - I do drive fairly hard, but I've never done a burnout in this truck. All those miles are either on Texas highways or in and around Dallas/Ft. Worth. It's not an issue of wear on either the outsides or the center of the tire... they are inflated properly and are wearing surprisingly even across the face.
Sounds like I'll be looking into Rugged Trail, Nitto, and Wrangler tires...
I also run 35" nitto terra grapplers. I don't think I'd call the 'very quiet' they are louder than the stock contimentals but they are not obnoxious or annoying at all. But you can 'hear' them a tad.
I know you said you weren't interested in Muds. I run the BFG Muds and you can hear them slightly as well. They wear awesome in my opinion, but I have been running Mickey's and Swampers on my F150 for the last 12yrs so anything is quieter and wear better then those.
I think the Pro Comp Xtreme A/T tire is pretty good looking IMO. I don't have any experience with them, but I'm told they are made with the latest technology. I bought a set of new 35x12.5x18's thinking I would run them on my lifted SD, but then I ran across a set of Toyo M/T's and had to have them. These new never mounted tires are sitting in my garage waiting for a buyer.
