On the '92 I just bought, the tach will only work if the engine gets above 4000 RPM when you goose it. As soon as it goes back into OD the tach drops offline again. I also get an IDM failure code which I assume this is the reason. My question is, is this resistor mounted on the instrument cluster or in the engine harness. I did a search and after 15 pages I got bored. Read alot of stuff about switching and installing but no repairs. From what I read, the cluster just goes in and the tach works, would mean it's built in? I don't want to go ripping into another vehicle harness at the moment.
The 22k ohm resistor in the IDM circuit is in the engine wiring harness. It's about a foot from the main engine harness connector. The engine harness connector is what I call the connector where the engine harness plugs into the chassis harness. They give you a plug so you can pull the motor and take the engine harness out. It's protected in shrink wrap.
That's the way it was on the '90 351W I just installed. GEEEZZZ. Would this be the cause of the inoperative tach. If it is, it's going to stay broke for awhile, LOL.
What code do you get? Which part of the test does it come in, KOEO, CM, KOER?
If you look at a wiring diagram (haynes manual, etc) you'd see that the negative coil wire is connected to the tach pickup for the instrument cluster, and the IDM circuit w/ the 22k ohm resistor. If you're having a bad tach signal, you've got a problem in this area.
KOEO
111-System Pass
28- Loss of IDM on right side
33-EGR not opening(I forgot to do the WOT)
76-Insufficient VAT, user error(probably associated with 33)
CM
28- Loss of IDM on right side
33-EGR not opening(I forgot to do the WOT)
76-Insufficient VAT, user error(probably associated with 33)
KOER
32-EGR not controlling
53-TPS input to high(I have another one to put on)
86-WOT A/C cut-off circuit fault
I'm going to do another test after I change the TPS in a couple of days.
