Question Man hours for cab swap?

It's the '87 F350 4X4 in my sig. Just want estimates to complete the swap only - no body work or paint. I'm pretty sure I know what I'm in for, as we're in the middle of another total truck resto, but this one is for function only. It'll be done in a pretty decently equipped shop. How long do you think it takes?

I just performed a cab swap on a 88 f-250 reg. cab. Truck was a 460 5speed with 4wd and Lariat package with airconditioning. Donor truck was a 91 diesel with overdrive automatic and 2wd base model truck with no air. the most time consuming portion of the cab swap is swapping the dash and wiring from the old truck. The more the two cabs are alike in options, the quicker it will go. the holes in the floor are already there for the 4wd and 5speed, the corresponding floor plates just need to be installed. the more they are unalike the more hole have to be drilled and filled. Your best bet is to remove the old cab and set it side by side with the new cab and match the holes. the fenders and hood must be removed obviously but the box does not have to be. Total man ours involved was essentialy a good weekends worth of work. If you have access to a chain hoist or a tractor with a loader it will save many headaches by lifting the cab straight up off the truck. Also be careful with the year of cab. I had to replace every inch of wiring in the replacement cab which isnt too hard but wouldnt have to be done if they were from the same year. If you have any more questions I would be glad to answer them.

Wow, thanks alot. Mine's very similar, except it's an '87 XL with no air. Access to a loader, and or a chain hoist isn't a problem. I was thinking about two long days myself and can recruit some decent help too. Right now I just don't know what way is best. Considering just repairing this one, but it's pretty rough - and that's very time consuming too. Probably the smartest thing would be to replace it, Problem is that it got a fresh 460, good trans, plow, salt spreader, and a new flat bed. It's a great truck for what I need.

How do you suggest handling the VIN tag?

If you can get a clear title with the replacement cab, I would go with that since paper work is more legal. Other wise just switch vin plates. especially if you don't ever plan on selling the truck. If you are still concerned, consult your local sheriffs dept. they should be able to advise you on laws concerning vin plates. We didnt do any changing on the vin on our replacement cab due to the truck being predominantly used on a farm and the farmer didnt care.
