Manual to Automatic?
I was wondering what would be involved in changing a 2000 manual ranger 4x4 into an automatic? I already know that i have to get a new trans and buy a shifter, but other than that i dont know. I know it wont be cheap, but im willing to do it if i knew what had to be done. if someone could give me a list of what i would have to do, i would greatly appreciate it, thanks.

*Tranny cooler and lines (steel)
*New ECM
*Wiring harness to tie into tranny
*New brake pedal setup. This *could* be just dumping the old pedals from the pivot down and getting the single one, to be installed from the pivot down.
*Wiring mod disabling 4lo engagement when clutch is in and enabling 4lo engagement when in neutral and probably park
*Not sure if there would be a driveline difference
I would suggest getting your hands on a good service manual, like the Ford one, and carefully study the wiring differences between the two. A wrecked vehicle with donar parts would be a good friend.

If you currently have a 4.0L, a tranny from an eariler 2.8L, 2.9L, or 4.0L may work. You may be able to use a C5. The C5 was installed from '83-'84 on 4X4 Rangers and Bronco II's.

Not sure exactly how your current PCM will address the manual transmission not being there. As far as the wiring, you'll have to wire the reverse lights up and bypass the neutral saftey switch. You will also loose overdrive during this swap. You'll need the crossmember from the C5 truck I think. The driveshafts may need need to be lengthened or shortened. I am going to send you a link to a website that has some decent information on this swap. I would post it, but it's a FTE Competitor.
