1992 Bronco to PSD?

OK Guys, I always look to the gurus here to see if my crazy ideas will work so have at it.

Since 1992, the HD Fords have used E4OD transmissions. I have a 1992 Bronco, 302, E4OD. The transmission seems to be my largest problem as it is controlled by the same computer that controls the Speed Density 302. To do a MAF swap means EEE-V, not EEC-IV and alot of wiring problems. I was wondering if the early turbo diesels from 1992-1996 with E4OD trannies and 4x4 with the electronic BW transfer case would work.

Are they EEC-IV?

Same tranny or different E4OD?

F-250's and 350's have front leafs, Bronco has coils and dual shocks?

Front end sag? Suspension mods?

Redo entire fuel system?

Exhaust not an issue, plenty of room?

Radiator?

Is there room for a turbo diesel without cutting out the wheel wells, firewall, and motor mounts?

Thanks for the feedback,
Tom

a diesel will fit rite in there, cause the bronco and pickup are the same thing from the b pillar foward. the problem you will encounter will be front suspension due to the increased weight, and wiring, depending on the year of diesel engine/trans combo you go for.

As far as power and longevity go, which PSD would you recommend?

Also, which PSD's are EEC-IV?

As far as suspension goes, what am I looking at? Beefier shocks? better coils? Steering stabilizer?

Thanks,
Tom

psd is computer controlled. idi is one wire to the fuel shutoff valve. as far the suspension, yes, all of the above. also remember that diesel trans is diesel specific. you can not use a gasser trans on a diesel.

I installed a 6.9 diesel C6 into a 1988 EB Bronco. It was a full restoration with front clip off a 96 F250 PSD. I put a 1986 9" rear in it but stayed with the stock front TTB, I had 31" Michelin LT tires on it. The stock springs were already tired so I bought springs for a 5.8 Bronco. I did a lot of playing with gear ratios in the rear to find a decent highway rpm. 3.00 was what I chose but with an E4OD 3.50s would have been great.
All the diesel stuff was bolt on with the diesel front clip. Wiring was the only issue for me.
If you could get a 95/96 PSD donor truck, you could use the truck's harness and splice in the extra Bronco stuff.
I used the truck for daily driving and also pulling my car trailer. Inside noise level was ok but you still knew it was a diesel around town. The Michelins had no trouble with the extra weight, the TTB suspension stood up well as far as BJs and steering, I didn't do any offroading and very little 4wd use. The coils started to sag after about a year and a half air bags inside them would have helped. I would definitely recommend a 9" rear, 8.8 just not up to the task. A set of rear air bags or even full rear air ride would have helped . When you have tons of towing power you want to use it!!!!!
I only ran with the diesel for about 2 years and sold the Bronco. I thought it would be a hard sell but the first guy that looked at it bought it. That was back in 2001, still miss it. It sure made guys do a double take.

I missed a couple of your original questions:
Fuel system: I just disabled the in tank pump and used existing delivery/return lines.
EEC IV only in 94, 1st year and only with 5spds. very hard to diagnose fuel problems!
Definitely quad shock front!
Trans is diesel only!
If you build it they will love it!!

Well, it was a thought. I might do it in the future when money and time are not issues.

Seems like it is too much motor for the truck. There has to be a F-250 4x4 with the E4OD in it from the 1989-1996 time frame that would be a drop in as far as the engine, computer, tranny, transfer case goes. After that, I guess you would need to play with gears, etc. and possibly take the 9" from the donor vehicle.

I will consider this as a future play thing if I get another Bronco in bad shape and have the time and friends to help out.

Great idea but way too mucho $$$$$ and time to play with my daily driver.
