Trans fluid change process

I have an '03 E150 with the 5.4/4R70W and 45200mi.

I'm referring to this article here, and I need something clarified...

Specifically steps 4-6...4 says to clamp the hose to the return line, 5 says to run the engine until I see air in the tubing, then refil with the same amount. 6 says to repeat 5 until I've added 13 quarts.

I'm just wondering how much fluid is pumped out each time the vehicle is run? Won't that just pump out the new fluid in the trans also?

Thanks!

-Cory

I'm quite confussed also... I was told that I MUST drain the torque converter

I didn't and got hollered at someone "from here" told me that I only did 1/3 of the job...

Sorry I couldn't help ya ....

Just wanted to add my 2 cents worth

i just drained my pan (4 quarts) and added 4 quarts back. I didnt drain my converter or flush my lines. i figure 4 quarts of new is better than 4 quarts of old. Changed filter and added 4 quarts. 96 explorer 4r70w tranny awd. added 4 quarts of mercon V. my haynes repair manual did not say to drain convertor or flush lines. My tranny holds 13 quarts but all i changed was 4 of the 13.

If you follow the procedure you won't pump out the new fluid. The new fluid pushes the old fluid out in front of it. This procedure will also change all the fluid in the torque converter. If you have a 2002 or newer you don't have a drain plug in the torque converter, so this is the only way to change the torque converter's fluid.

Each time you run the engine you should get 5-7 quarts.

Then when you change your engine oil you should just change the filter and replace the one quart of oil that's in the filter. Leave the four quarts of old oil in the engine. It's good for it.
It's the same thing as what you just did to the transmission.

Well how do you change it all without a machine to flush the system?

so your saying its harder on your transmission to jerk the pan off put a new filter and clean the metal shavings out of the pan magnet? i think not. If the fluid isnt burnt up clean pan, new filter and add how ever many quarts come out back in. If its burnt flush the old out. if its bright red and doesnt smell then just put you a new filter and clean out the pan magnet. or just leave it alone and drive it till it breaks down. then pay to have it fixed.

That's not at all what I said.

I said if you are just changing the filter and what's in the pan it is about as good for the trans as changing the engine oil filter and the oil in it is for the engine.

If you are going to do the work, why not do it right and change all of the fluid, not just 1/3? If you read the procedure it also shows how to change the filter, too.

so its safe to run your transmission completly out of fluid without adding new? sounds dangerous. Guess if you dont put it in a gear it shouldnt hurt it?

The procedure calls for moving the shifter into each position while running the engine to get the old fluid out of each clutch.

You need to shut the engine off as soon as you see the first air bubble. That means it's starting to run out of fluid. Transmissions don't have pressurized bearings like an engine does, so this procedure won't hurt the trans.
