I have a 79 f-250 with a 390. Sometimes when I start it there is a slight tapping noise. If I rev it a little for a second it goes away. Then tonight I was driving home after about an hour drive on the freeway when it wasn't so loud in the cab, I let off the gas to slow down a little, then I hit the gas to maintain speed and it started tapping. So I pressed on the pedal and let off and i just kept on doing it, and it kept on tapping. As the rpm went up the tapping went faster... anybody have an idea what the dealio is?
Could be a number of things. How's oil pressure? Could be in the valvetrain, wristpins, exhaust leak, etc. Take a mechanics stethoscope or a long screwdriver and get under the hood with it running and tapping and try to localize the noise. Just my 2.
How many miles on the truck? and how many miles on the oil since last changed?
I had a 68 F250 with a 390 that had a lifter that would let me know when it wanted it's oil changed. If I went over 3500 miles it would start tapping.
I generaly change my oil between 2500 and 3000 so it was a nice alarm..
JD,
I am not sure the mileage of the motor... someone swapped it in the 79 at an unknown time with unknown mileage on the motor. I am not a 100% sure on the mileage but probably close if not over 2200ish. I will try changing the oil. Thanks guys!
