Instrument cluster lighting...

Finally got to some overdue maintenance on my 68 this weekend. In addition to a bad speedo cable, the little red lens for the high beam indicator fell out of place, giving me a nice unobstructed view of a very bright bulb. While I had the cluster apart I got thinking about how much I hate the ugly pale lighting of the instruments at night. As luck would have it, I had a cluster from a mid eighties Ranger lying around with little blue bulb covers inside that tinted the light. I glued a couple into my cluster and it sure looks a lot better now.

Actually, it does look pretty cool. These bulb covers are fairly thick so they do cut down some of the light. Thinner ones might be brighter but another alternative suggested itself to me as I was in a local auto parts store. Some of them now stock an accessory line for the little rice burners like custom pedal covers, shift *****, etc. They also have 194 bulbs tinted in different colors. These fit the 70-72 clusters which works for me as I've upgraded to a 71 wiring harness in my 68. I don't remember which bulb is in the heater control assembly but if it's one of these, all the lights will match.
