Rear axle seals
Our 2000 F250 with V10 has very low mileage...50,000. We hitched up our RV and headed out on a 5,000 mile round trip to Texas, Arizona and back to WA state. When we got to Phoenix my left rear brake rotor started smoking while braking. I took the truck into the Ford dealer on a Saturday morning and begged him to look at it for me since we had to be on the road by Monday. It seems the left rear axle seal had blown out, soaked the brake pads. They replaced the brakes on both sides, replaced the axle seal and got us back on the road. Question is. Is this a problem that is common? What would cause the Axle seal to go bad at such low mileage? We were only towing 7,000 lbs. Oh and by the way...we only averaged 8.5 mpg with all the wind.
