So last night I decided to grab a midnight snack, and took off toward town. Unfortunately, I had some problems. About half way there, i hear a pop pop pop in my left front wheel. Think I could have an immenent flat, I pull over. The good news, My tire is not flat. The bad news, my right front is smoking and smells quite like fire. Also,my right rear center cap is mysteriously absent. I pull the center cap on my right front to inspect more carefully. The cap comes off with the center cap inside. The smoke stopped immediately, and I could find nothing obviously broken and the lugs were tight. However, as I drove around looking for my lost center cap, the popping began again. ALSO, I noticed a problem with my brakes. The pedal acts normal until depressed about 1 inch, then it drops almost to the floor, where it begins to act normal again. I decided to hurry home and park my truck. I inspected again in the daylight today, but due to imminent rain, I haven't pulled the wheel off yet. Also, I'm on a college campus, and I don't have any place to work on it, nor do I have many of my tools. It's a 99 4x2. There's really not much there to break...brakes, wheel, spindle, suspension, and steering......
Any advice would be helpful.
I noticed you are in Abingdon. Where do you go to college? I'm up here in Bluefield.
Something is wrong with the braking system, and it could very easily be related to you're problem. I had a friend drive is truck once with the front brakes sticking and his center caps melted off!
Sounds like the right front brake is sticking, and the popping from the left front could also be related. Very possibly a malfuctioning caliper. There could be air in the system and/or a leak in the system. Possibly could be the master cylinder, which would probably cause problems on both front wheels.
Actually, I'm in school at Carson-Newman down in TN. Looks like I broke a breakpad. A big chunck of break pad was rubbing on the brake rotor and spindle. I can replace the pad, but I'm also going to tear the wheel down because I'm afraid I fried the Bearings.
