Cold Air Intake

I recently installed a K&N FIPK. I bought a while ago but I was hesitant to install it because of issues that I read about them: namely (A) they do not provide as good filtration as paper filters and (B) they pull hot air from the engine. We recently had a few days of good weather in my area. I went up to PEP Boys to get a seat cover. Every "Fast and the Furious" wanna be for miles around was in the parking lot installing hi performance air intakes. When I got home I said what the heck and installed the K&N FIPK. I was amazed at the extra horses this provided. I installed a K&N filter wrap to act as a pre filter and increase filtration. I have aslo been eyeballing the stock air inlet tube and am wondering is there any way I can fab it to bring in cold air to the FIPK. Has anyone tried this?

I am replying because I recall seeing a K&N setup that was for "OFF ROAD USE ONLY" a while back. I think it was called an AIRCHARGER. Is anyone familiar with these? Texas emissions are fairly liberal and I am thinking about putting a K&N on.

As far as the cold air intake goes, where would you get the cold air from? If you go low, then you have dirt and water as a problem. If you go high, then there is the belt and hoses to think about. The only option I see is to change grilles and do like the Viper does, air on either side of the radiator. If you know someone who does custom fiberglass molding and casting, they could do it for you. Just remember to make sure that the design does not bottleneck to rob you of whatever horsepower gains you got from the filter to begin with.

I knew a guy in Waco that did this on Camaros, he took one fog light out and used it as the intake port. You might also want to look at changing hoods to something with a cowl or scoop that could be made functional with some plumbing. It would be up and in clean air.

The only ram air tube I know of for the 80-96 Bronco's is the air intake for the 94 F250 with a 460 it mounts beside the radiator.

F-250 Ram Air

It looks like a nice piece of plastic but will it fit a Bronco intake? Also, what about the case around the K&N?

I bet that there are options out there for an F-150 if you look hard enough. You might have to use an AIRAID product that will fi tthe K&N. On the F-250 piece, there appears to be a bottleneck at the 90 turn in it. Also, it appears to go down and if that is the case, high water and road debris/dirt may be a problem.

It is a piece of plastic, it mounts beside the radiator. The inlet goes throught the radiator support for fresh air, and the other end goes to the air box just like the air tube that mounts on top the radiator support. Yes it will fit a Bronco the picture is from my 94 Bronco. no modifications have to be made to use it. You can buy it at Ford for about $20.00
In the picture you can see where it mounts. If you click on the picture it will take you to more pictures of the ram air setup.

94 XLT,
That's a nice hook up you have there. I see you are using a stock air box with a drop in filter. I have the K&N FIPK with the "cone" filter. The F-250 air tube that comes in by the radiator looks like it can be used to supply cold air to the FIPK (it might look a little ghetto ) . Did you get it from a dealer or order it online? Has anyone used (or know where to get) the Aircharger Tomtrevino mentioned?

I found this site with info on the Aircharger. The K&N site says it is for off raod and racing. Sounds good to me...

Does the FIPK setup work as well as just wrapping the air intake tubes up in some header wrap or similar insulation? Being a broke college student, that's what I was thinking about...

Yeah the performance unlimited info is quite a revelation and pretty much the best reason to just skip the FIPK all together.

From performance unlimited website:
"
61mm THROTTLE BODY

For 460 Ford EFI engines

Power and MPG Increase

After testing with this upgrade Mileage was not affected, however, The absence of water needed to run through the throttle body (like OEM) also decreased the octane requirement of the fuel therefore dramatically reducing fuel cost per mile in that sense... saving the equivalent of 6% fuel savings per mile. Power was significantly increased by 22 hp and 31 ft lbs of toque and the throttle response was very notably improved."

Wow what a line of crap. Water is run through the TB/EGR to Cool it because of the hot exhaust gasses in the EGR. What would that have to do with "decreasing octane requirments" lol Removeing it will make the intake hotter??? I don't think I'll be buying from them.

Simple, if you want to run lower octane, lower the timimg.

94 XLT,
Where did you get the insulation material and how did you fasten it? (Sorry for the newbie questions..)

I bought everything at Lowes home improvement center. Total cost was about $25.00
The insulation is held on with 2" wide foil tape. The picture below is also a link to more pictures of the installation.
