I need to find out what engine I have in my truck. It is a 1972 F100 Sport Custom .The VIN # is F10GNM80045.Maybe some of you know ofa web site that could help me ?I'm new to Ford Trucks and vehicles ,so I would appreciate and help I can get.
I think on a 30+ year old truck the best thing is to look for numbers. The door on my 1971 decoded to 302, the guy who sold it said 360, once I found all the numbers it was a 390 from a car with a truck intake and a 1979 carb from a 351.
Numbers are not reliable. It is impossible to tell from the external numbers whether a FE is a 360 or a 390. The only way to know for sure is to measure the stroke or drop the pan and get the number off the crankshaft.
Best way to tell from one engine family to the next is count the Vlave cover bolts. I don't know them, but if you post them someone will know. I do know that FE's have 5 bolts on valve cover.
