I did a search about what the temp should be without a load. I have a newly rebuilt tranny third time in 130,000 miles and I think I am still running hot. The most I have seen since the rebuild is about 200 that seems to be the norm when sitting and idling after running a while. I am a little confused on the intercooler. I dont mess with tranny's at all But after spending $4000.00 + I think I need to look at this. I have looked at other intercooler systems people have recommended through this site and it doesn't look anything like I have. What exactly do I need The most I pull is 6500 lb. Need help cant keep replacing the crappy E40D
When you say intercooler I assume you mean trans cooler.
You really should add another trans cooler if the trannys are poppin' that often. The most I saw with the stock cooler pulling 10K was 230 degrees. I added another trans cooler (total of 2) and barely gets to 160 degrees. Trannys alot happier now.
I'm sue other will chime in with more helpful info.

With the factory cooler only mine gets to 160 with no load. I haven't pulled the trailer with gauges yet so who knows how high it will get with a load.
my 96 stays at 155-160, most it's gotten to was 180 pulling 4000lbs in 100 degree weather. But sometimes it likes to freak out and shoot up to 210, that happend twice so far with no load, don't know what thats about.
Sounds to me like you're running the factory cooling system with no mods; tranny to single-loop aux cooler to radiator to tranny. Most folks are adding aux coolers rated at 25k GVW and taking the radiator out of the circuit. My system is 2 x 25k aux coolers; it runs at ambient + 60 degrees empty, ambient + 80 pulling 10k on a flat freeway, and ambient + 120 pulling 10k on steep grades. The worst measurement comes from idling thru LA freeway traffic, since the fan doesn't move enough air at idle.
just a side question, i'm about to install a bigger cooler. which lines, the one in the rear or on the passenger side of the tranny, go to the cooler and which one returns?

Jerme, the front line goes to the cooler & the rear is the return.
I've heard rumblings to that effect, but every time I change the oil, I detect nothing out of the ordinary. I am giving thought, however, to a valve that would isolate one of the coolers when one would suffice.
