I recently changed my transmission oil and filter on my 01 SD. Being a virgin in that department I looked for advice and or instructions here on the boards of FTE. I found what I was looking for in the FAQ section and the author was very good at his discription save for one thing. I've printed and read this thru many times and perhaps there should be a correction made. You read it and decide. Here's the problem I had. It explains what to get in the beginning which is great. I went and got all the things on the list I needed including 20qts of tranie oil. Thats where the problem starts. Read thru all of the instructions and did I miss something but after the 2nd "flushing" with the clear plastic tube from the cooler line should that be the end, correct? Well I read repeat steps ?a & c I think that I flushed another 5-6 qts out. Now I'm down to 1 qt and an empty pan. Think we should have quite sooner. Anyway all worked out and it was good experience. I'd just like someone else's thoughts on this or am I that dog gone ignorant. I have done more things by all the great advice given here that I hate to critize but this one got me. Thanks to all for the help past and future. Mick

Well Casey thats why I'm not sure. But it seems if you drop the oil from the pan in #1 directive an add the 6-7 qts, flush, then add 6 and flush and then it says repeat the previous 2 steps which I did and you end up flushing an additional 5-7 qts which would be about 18 qts with 2 qts left and an empty pan, correct? Thats the confusing part but maybe I just didn't understand it correctly and should have reattached the transmission line after I added the second 6 qts and not flushed as that would have gotten me close with 1+ qt for topping off. Just read the instructions like me, a dumb blonde and it makes sense I guess.
5.This is where the second person comes in handy. One person starts the engine, while the other holds the line over the drain bucket. A clothes pin can replace the person holding the line in the bucket.
Run the engine until you see some air in the clear tubing. As soon as you see air shut off the engine. Refill through the dipstick tube with the same amount as you just pumped out.
NOTE: If you drained the pan and the torque converter, fluid will not run out until you fill the pan a second time. Run the engine for 30 seconds, then stop and add six more quarts.
6. Repeat step 5 until you have added 19 quarts with of new ATF to the system with an E4OD or 4R100. Repeat until you have added 13 quarts with the 4R70W.
At least one time while the engine is running move the shifter through each position from P to 1, pausing about 5 seconds at each position. This will change some fluid that would otherwise be trapped in the valve body, accumulators, and clutches.
These are the steps where I think you made the mistake. The last part of Step #5 is too add fluid, not pump it out again. You did pump the new fluid out one time too many. You should have ended up with about 19 quarts of old fluid removed, you probably had about 25 quarts pumped out.
