Well tell ya what when I was still farming I had diesel delivered, the exact same fuel went into the offroad tank as went into the onroad tank but they dropped a dye packet into the offroad tank when they filled it up.
Hope that answers your questions as clearly as I can state it.
The fuel trucks do the same thing here in WV now. It has been several years since we had high sulpher off road diesel.
The difference between on highway fuel which used to be bluish amber in color and now is more of a greenish amber.
If you get caught with red in your on highway truck the fine is 5000 dollars for the first offense here in WV. When the Tax and Revenue Criminal Investigation boys set up a road check, they check every diesel that comes down the road. If you are driving a Diesel Rabbit or a Peterbuilt they will dip your tanks.
depends on your state, but if you homebrew your own bio, or run WVO, they expect you to still pay road use taxes. Bio at the pump sometimes has subsidies, so the tax is still payed, but yet they give a break on it as well...
i dnt see why u should, your helping the environment and that should be a reason for it to be tax free. You already pay taxes on Lye and Methanol, why pay more. Our govt is stupid sometimes, I hate living in a money hungry world!!
It's because fuel taxes pay to build and maintain our highways. If everyone started using untaxed fuel (no matter how environmentally friendly the fuel is) before to long we would back to driving on dirt roads.

Do you really want me to get started on the waste of our government?
we use red dyed diesel in our lobster boats... I also hear that heating oil is very chemically similar to diesel and is also dyed red to prevent use on road.
home heating oil is basically number 1 diesel, and would actually run in your truck although not nearly as good, and it's what they blend with the #2 diesel for winter blend.
Actually, some heating oil is #2, it depends where your tank is as to which they deliver. Tank outside, #1, in the basement, #2. I used to have to buy it, and #2 was always on my tickets, as it was in the basement.
It is interesting isnt it? the govt claims they want to increase fuel efficiency requirements. they also subsidize alternative fuels to increase their use. if vehicles become more fuel efficient, they obviously use less fuel...less fuel usage means less road taxes collected. more usage of alternative fuels means more tax dollars go to subsidies which means a net loss in tax revenue to the govt.

Nope it doesn't work that way.
They will simply raise taxes.
As my ole grandad used to say to me, "The govt will never go broke as long as you have money in your pocket".
