Has anyone ever had to replace the ballast resistor before? My '86 F250/460/4x4 is showing some sypmtoms that this thing could be my culprit. My manual shows it to actually be a special length of wire in the harness and that it should never be cut, spliced or replaced by any other type of non-resistance wire. If anyones ever had to tackle this and did so with success, feel free to fill me in on the details. My wiring diagram doesn't really show exactly where it's located. It simply states it's part of the harness inside the passenger compartment.
Usually nothing goes wrong with that wire unless it has been messed with or shorted out. The last time I checked I could buy replacement wire assemblies from Ford. The wire itself is WELDED to other wires in the wiring harness. You can not crimp or solder this wire to make connections.
Check again, most likely your problems are elsewhere in the system.

No, that wire is not welded to anything. I am having the same problem. The wire is crimped together.
You can search for "hot wire" to see where I am at with it. Basically, I think I am going to replace it with an external ballast resistor....I hope.
Thanks for the reply. Turns out that the carb was the problem. I rebuilt the Holley 650 DP and all is well.
Thanks to everyone for the tips. I actually was able to learn a great deal from them.
