I just did my auto trans filter and modulator yesterday. It was a bit more difficult than I had expected, the modulator anyway. I replaced the modulator, vaccuum hose to it, trans filter, and ATF. The hardest part was getting the modulator out. Access to that bolt that holds it in is over the exhaust pipe, and behind a bracket. I did only loosen the heat shield, and moved it enough to get the little sucker out. The guys at NAPA didn't believe me that it had a modulator until they checked the drawing. Filter was straightforward. I also did a flush of the fluid. My van seems to have a second cooler, so it has on in the rad, and one in front. I used the line from there and got a good bit of very dirty oil out. It now shifts so much better. Before it downshifted very hard, and once in a while shifted slowly. Now, you cannot even feel the 1-2 shift, 2-3 is only noticeable.
Now, do I dare attempt that leaking valve cover gasket... no way, not yet.
Nope, I forgot about that. I don't know why the new filter didn't come with them. The old ones were a bit hard, but I just had to use them. I didn't realize until I had the old one out that I needed new o-rings.
So people pull off the heat shield? That is just foolish! That cat is so close!g
vwhed1979. When I first bought my '87 Aerostar van (3.0V6) I wrapped my exhaust system with the common header wrap, which was from Thermo-Tec. I used the 1" wrap. It really helped out eliminating a lot of undeeded exhaust heat on or near the bellhousing, transmission, etc. I wrapped everything, except the two cats and the muffler. Under hood heat was also noticeably reduced. It was an hour job, and that was with me taking my time. The Aerostar's front on car ramps is recomended. The wrap looks as good today, as when I first installed it, several years ago, and thousands of miles, of troublefree service. Ed PS Thermo Tec makes a good product,
Ed,
good idea...would have helped me years ago on hot country vacation trips...the heat from the firewall and front floor can be a real toe roaster in the Aero on those 100d F + days in desert country....worst rig I've ever owned for summer floor heat

96, You would be the perfect candidate for this type of procedure. You would have noticed a huge difference. When I first bought my Aerostar, I noticed how the exhaust system crossed over, close to the A4LD transmission, and other components. A friend had told me about doing this, as he had wrapped his exhaust system on a early 90s Fleetwood Motor Home (near new at the time) and he said it helped with engine power when climbing hills, heat soak conditions, (when the motor home was shut off for 10 minutes or so, for getting gas, after a long run) He recomended the Thermo Tec wrap. I knew my Aerostar's exhaust system would never get as hot as the exhaust system on a cross country motor home, climbing steep hills, in desert heat summer tempuratures, etc. Also, since the wrap is designed to handle direct heat, there is a wide variety of uses, Even around your home, insulating copper hot water pipes, from your water heater, dishwasher, ect.
