There was a period of time where they used black for the block and head and red for the valve cover. I don't know when that period of time was, but I knew they did it for a while. I'm thinking it was sometime before 1966.

In '59 & '60 Black for the Whole engine & accessories, w/ Ford Vermilian Red being used for the Valve Cover, though sometimes you'll find the Colonial White was used on the Aire Cleaner instead of Black.

As I recollect, Ford Blue engine blocks didn't see the light of day till the mid '60s.
