I have a 90 2wd Areo with a 4.0 engine, I have replaced the steering rack 2 times in the last 4months, I also put on a rebilt pump with a fiter in the return line. I still having a issue with play in the steering wheel and it will not stay centered. I have put on new tie rod ends and the ball joints are good, is there anytine else that would cause this besides the rack? Thanks, Allen
I'll start the answer process but will be away until tomorrow. Perhaps the other forum gurus can finish up.
First, what happened with the first replacement rack that necessitated replacement after only 4 months? Second, did you have alignments done after each rack/tie rod replacements? Lastly, how many miles on the van and were there steering issues prior to the first rack replacement?
First rack was put on after the water in the pump froze at -7 and took out the seal in the rack. No there were no problems with the steering at this point. First rack was put on with new tie rods and a alinement. It would not center the steering wheel, it had alot of playin in it and would not hold a corner, almost went on a couple of turns, so I replaced it agin. New one still has play in the steering wheel and it will not center. Drives a bit funny with a 1/4 turn of play in it. The alinement was redone after the new rack was put on. The van has 240,000 on it.
240k miles....have the A arm and/or upper suspension arm bushings ever been replaced?....betcha that's were the wear play is at...will show up on corners and rough roads the most
Hey Bertha66, fancy meeting you here.
I agree with 96_4wdr. I do my control arm bushings every 100Kmi. I also do my own Alignment, well the toe in part of it anyway. Check your rag joint too. Sometimes it gets damaged when the rack is swapped out. Especially with that centering up issue you mentioned.

Thanks 96_4wdr and FBP, Ya FBP I do hang out here from time to time. I will recheck the front end agin, the alinement shop checked it all and said things were good and tight, but the control arm bushings have never been done.
