You cant press out the uppers, the whole control arm has to be changed. The control arm complete with ball joints are about the same price as the lower ball joints and a heck of a lot easier to change, try to use Moog parts if at all possible, they are the only ones that allow you to replace the upper ball joint only, and they are proven chasis parts. While you are in there I would see about replacing the inner and outer tie rod ends as well, especially if they are original as well, trust me they need it. I got about 175,000 out of my tie rod ends and ball joints and that was about 50,000 miles to much. Good Luck.

A buddy of mine has a 99 F150. He took his truck to a mechanic and they want $900 for replacing the upper and lower ball joints. I have not had to do this on my 93 yet so I'm wondering how hard this is. Any warnings on doing this or is it pretty straight forward? Also is this a defect or is it normal for them to wear out at 100 K? My '93 has 223 K over similar driving conditions and they don't seem to be a problem.

They just wear out faster on the 97-03. I've heard of some being worn out in under 30K. It's a fairly easy job, provided you have a ball joint press.
