I talked to the place that did my tranny today. He told that with a diesel you can probably stay in OD and be fine. He said with gas, you don't have much power to spare, so you probably need to stay in 3rd. He said the big deal is keeping the transmission in lockup. If it is coming out of lockup, that is when it is going to overheat and self destruct.

Question

I think MRL123 has some great advice in regards to watching the tranny temp while towing in o.d. or third. Does anyone have any input on synthetics in the E4OD? I'm giving it a lot of thought for my next major service.

I have two Ford trucks, one with the AOD, one with the E4OD. The instructions from the manual are to tow in OD for up to 50% of the max rated tow weight with the AOD (tow in 3rd over 50%). The instructions for the E4OD are to simply tow in OD, no matter the weight. However, I would agree with those who say that you should lock out OD if the tranny is constantly shifting back and forth between 3rd and OD--that's not good for the tranny.
