Hi to all. Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Matt, I'm a 22yo paramedic student, and just bought a new ranger. Been driving 'em all my 'adult' life, the whole 6 years of it.
The new truck isn't anything to write home about, bu its a step up from my '88 beater ranger. 1999 Reg. Cab. 4cyl, manual tranny. Dark Grey. Really really clean truck, the previous owner was an auto detailer. No big plans for it until after medic school. For now, just a CAIS, a catback system, MAS...regular stuff.
After medic school, plans for a mid-travel kit from camburg and some deavers for the rear. Yes, another prerunner. :-)
Like I said, just wanted to introduce myself! Glad to be here.
If you like turning your own wreches, be sure to check out the "Technical Info" thread, that Ken, our moderator, has located atop this forums main page. lots of good troubleshootng & other info there.
Welcome Mattt, sounds like a nice truck, theres alot to be said for a base ranger, it's like an artist having a blank canvas. I am glad to see your going for the prerunner look, I'm not much into the slammed trucks, I'm more into the offroad sence.
yeah, growing up in San Diego, I've been around desert trucks as long as i can remember. And they look SOOOO much cooler. haha. Unfortunatly, its a bit pricey, the suspension alone will end up being around $3000...
You can get a lift for your truck alot cheaper than 3 grand, it won't be a long travel race suspension, but your truck will look cool untill you can aford the other one. Dixon brothers has some nice offroad suspensions for rangers, but thier expensive as well.
oh no, ive been involved in racing desert trucks for years, since high school, and while dixon bros. makes nice stuff, companies like camburg and H&M are hard to beat when it comes to quality. This truck will eventually be a light chase duty truck, for food stuffs and light supplies, more than anything, so it'll be worth it to me, to wait, and put something in it I know will get me to the checkpoint...
I'm sorry Matt, I thought you just wanted it to look like a prerunner, I didn't know you were gonna use it as one. For sure, wait for the good setup, and good luck, it sounds fun!!
I feel ya bro, are you gonna have alot of decals, I think they look great. On mine I have moble1,ford trucks, motorcraft, fox, and bf goodrich so far, I'm not sure what else to put on, I look at other trucks, and see what else appeals to me. I use all the products I advertize on the truck except for fox, it just looks cool with the fox tail hanging out of the O in fox he he.
My truck is the first white truck I ever bought, and it just looked so plain, so the decals ad some flare to it. I have an 04 ranger xlt soper cab 4x4. with the 4.0 sohc 5-speed, and 410 gears. Iv'e put fx4 level 2 mods on it, like the shifter, instrument cluster, skid plates, shocks, bf goodrich tires, tow hooks, not sure whitch locker yet. My engine mods are, jba headers, gibson catback, bama programer, e-fan, udp, and waiting for AEM to develope my cai. It runs super, but sure is a money pit, but to me it's worth it, and I'm still not done. I cranked my t-bars to level the truck, I run bf 265/75-16's, I'm pround of it. I hope your truck turns out as well.
me too. I'm thinking of dropping in a 4lt after medic school. I've driven trucks w/ the 2.5, and while they do alright, having the 4ltr in a regular cab would be a lot of fun
A 4.0 in a lighter ranger would be awesome, even if your truck had the new 2.3 duratec, but you missed it by a couple of years, they came out in 01. They're developing all kinds of perfomance stuff for them, it's geared for the focus, but will cross over to the ranger. Cosworth has a 240 hp stage kits for the duratec, without forced induction, it's all motor. Focus sport is working on a turbo, and F1 is making a sc. With the mustang now useing the 4.0, there will be alot of performance stuff comming out for them, explorer express makes a sc for the 4.0 sohc. A lot of options for you in going with the 4.0.
yeah, i was looking into the 2.3 duratec. it'd probably be an easier swap than the 4.0, but i think the 2.3 would be better as a street truck, and the 4.0 will be a little more condusive to the desert-stype driving i'll be doing. My dad DOES have the 2.3 tho....hmmmmmmmmmmm.......
I like the torque of the 4.0, it's great offroad, but I'm not racing, just trail riding, and such. Torque is more of an asset than hp in a 4x4, but I like both hee hee!!!!
