Smile Hello from a new member.

Hello gang. I have to admit I feel like I am behind enemy lines since I am a long time Cummins owner, but needs have changed and I am in the market for an Excursion. You have no idea how much grief I have received from my Dodge brotherin, but if the wife and I are going to buy a full size SUV with a diesel, the Ford is the only option. I have no problem with buying a Powerstoke, and have many friends that have always had good service out of them. My problems is I have no personal experience with the Powerstroke. I can look at any year Cummins and now what to look for as far as problems, but the blue oval is mystery to me.

Help a man out, what things should I be on the look out for while shopping for a used X? It may help if you know what I will be looking for.

2001-2003
7.3 PS
4x4
less than 75k miles

Any advice you can give would be great. We tow a boat on a weekly basis and take trips all over the southeast with it. The boat on the trailer comes in at around 6000lbs so the X should have no problem with that. Other than that it will be my daily driver. I currently have a 2005 2500 Ram Cummins 6-speed regular cab and with the plan being we will have our first child soon, it is not going to be enough room. I had thought about going to a crew cab, but really do not have a need for a pick up since I also have an older toyota for dump duty. I used to have a Suburban, and miss having that size vehicle, but due to the towing, the diesel is a better choice for us.

Thanks for any info you can give

You'll probably have a bunch of folks more knowledgeable than me come along shortly, but the single biggest thing to check would be the condition of the turbo. The stock airbox has always had issues properly sealing. Pull off the intake and examine the vanes to see whether they're pitted or not.

Following up from that, I'd jack up the front end and check for top-to-bottom play (ball joints are a weak link in these vehicles)

Also, with the truck idling, you might want to open up the oil fillter neck to see if there's excessive blow-by, or a bunch of smoke.

Also want to carefully examine for oil leaks -- the rear main will often show up as oil running down the bell housing.

Thanks, I will keep those hints in mind. The search continues. I am not in any hurry, so I can afford to wait for the right truck.
