Oil pump shaft engaged?

I recently installed a new distributor. When taking out the old one the oil pump shaft came out with it, leaving the holding clip behind. When i tried to install the oil pump shaft, and then the distributor, i could not get it aligned up. So i put a dab of gasket seal to the oil pump shaft and pushed it up inside the distributor then installed back into the motor. I pulled the distributor up and down several times and the oil pump stayed intack with the distributor. When i got the motor running it sounded like there was no oil pumping. The oil pressure gauge reads nothing. I let it run shortly to see if it would quit ticking. It did not. I do not want to proceed any further until i know for sure if it is pumping. Is it possible that the oil pump shaft is stuck up into the distributor shaft to far to engage the oil pump? Or is it a fool proof union between the two? Just as long as the distributor is flush against the block? Which it is! Thank you for any reply!

are you sure you are using the correct dizzy? one from a 351w would not work on a 302 for instance.

If you are using the original dizzy? Then the dizzy is up in the distributor to far. Probably the gasket seal is holding the dizzy up to far in the distributor. Your not pumping oil! Don't run the motor anymore until you get the dizzy in the oil pump. Hope you didn't damage your motor.

I pulled the valve cover and no oil was pumping. So i pulled the distributor back out and reinstalled the oil pump shaft first by itself ( took some time) but i made sure it was in the oil pump. Then installed the distributor. Guess what? Oil is pumping and my gauge registers good! I dont think i ran it long enough to damage the motor when the oil pump was not hooked up right. Now i just need to fine tune the timing!

I forgot to say it was an old stock 302 dizzy replaced with a proform HEI.

Glad to hear your problem solved. Happened to me one time to. But I had to pull the pan to find the dizzy!
