Had misfire on cyl #5 and replaced the coil 3 months ago. Everything worked fine until last week. "Check Engine" light came back, had it tested and it was the same coil pack. I replaced it again along with the spark plug and everything worked fine, truck ran perfect for the first hour. Went to lunch at work and while driving the truck died and I smelled a strong burning smell. Truck would not start again and the guages were all out. As it turns out the "Passive anti theft Tranceiver, Cluster, Ignition Coils, Powertrain Control Module Relay" fuse was blown (#30). I replaced the fuse and the truck started but the burning smell was back so i shut off the engine. I figured the only thing that changed was the coil over the weekend so I pulled the electrical connection to that #5 coil. Truck started and no burning. Obviously is run rough but thats to be expected since the electrical connection is not plugged into the coil. What do I do? Could this coil just be bad or do I have bigger issues? Please help!
Ok here is the latest. I pulled the #5 coil that I replaced and it was cracked and melted a bit, I could smell it was burned. Also there is a small wire connection that went into this coil and the insulation around the wire is all melted. I removed the wire, which seems to go back to the fuse box but couldnt get totally behind it so I had to cut it. Problem is there is a purple/white wire and also a gray wire. The Purple/White one seems to go to a conector and plugs into the coil but I dont know where the gray one goes. Can someone please let me know how the wiring is that leads to coil #5, again it's the only one that seems to be directly wired to power.
Thanks jcbfd, I still am not clear what to do. There are 2 wires a Purp/Wht and a solid gray, taped together and coming from behind the fuse box under the steering wheel. It looks like only the purp/white wire went through the firewall to a small red connector and was attached to the #5 coil. The problem is I have no idea where the gray one goes. I am afraid to hook this up with only the one wire to the coil. One other thing, I know each coil has a connection to it but this one is different, it was seperate from the others and only went to the #5 coil.
I cut the wires about 1 foot from the back of the fuse box and bought additonal wire and connectors. If I run the purp/wht to the coil what do I do with the gray?
Sorry. I misunderstood you. I thought you were talking about the coil connections themselves. Each coil should have 2 wires. If you need wiring diagrams, and if you do your own maintenance, one option would be to sign up with alldata.com. It costs about $25 for the first year, about $15 each year after, and they have all the factory info for your vehicle. I signed up when I was trying to fix a 4WD problem, and it was most helpful.
