Hi all. It's getting to be springtime, so I'll be posting more often.
Question:
I just bought a rebuilt stock 2bbl carb for my 360. It was allegedly pre-adjusted and just needed to be bolted on, so that's what I did and only tweaked the choke a little. The last carb was original, lacquered and had to go. This new one has one problem the old one also had, only now it's much worse.
When under load (say driving up a relatively steep hill), especially in higher (3rd) gear, the engine bogs down and gradually the truck slows. If I let off the gas the engine runs normally again, but I cannot accelerate without the engine bogging down again. On longer hills I have to wait until I'm slow enough to downshift to second and then I can get up the hill. I just can't gas it in third gear.
Haven't changed anything else. Last carb did have this problem but only slightly. Problem is very bad on this carb. Haven't touched the timing. Recent complete tune up, all fluids, all filters, etc.
Any (obvious) ideas what to look for before I get into it?
Amongst other things, I would check your power valve. That is supposed to enrichen the mixture under load. Make sure you have the right one. You might also want to check the fuel pressure to make sure you are getting the correct fuel pressure. Also, if there is a kink in the fuel lines somewhere, you won't be "flowing" the kind of volume you need under load. As ever, do the easiest thing first--that would be to check the fuel filter. Try those.
Along with Carl's comments make sure that your timing is correct and that your advance is working correctly. Failed vacuum or centrifugal weights being stuck can be traumatic. Timing light will tell this story.
Sounds more like a fuel pump, cant deliver enough fuel when under a load, you let up on the gas and the float bowl fills back up. Thats why both carbs have the same problem, not the carb.
