98 Expedition skipping but no code

my expedition has the 5.4. under acceleration the engine seems to be skipping or misfiring however it is not giving a code. check engine light is not on. It will blink a few times then go off. anyone know what this could be? I dont want to go to the stealership..

I have done many searches and they all lead to a bad coil pack. Is there anyway to determine which coil is going bad since I dont have the check engine light on?

It may be a bad cop, but dont go crazy now replacing parts in your engine without getting to the bottom of this. Whats the milage and when was the last time you had a tune up done, start from there good luck.

it has 137k. Cresent Ford did the last plug change at 104k. cost $350.00. It now has cleaned maf, new o2's, new air filter, no vaccum leaks.

There's at least a couple of threads on similar symptoms including flashing CEL - one of them mine. Long story short, I bought one new COP, installed it on 8 then rotated COPS 1 at a time until getting to the bad one..#3.

Problem may be COP or just the boot, but I found no sure way to check. That #3 COP tested at the right values, so as far as I'm concerned the only check is to drive it.

How old are your spark plugs?

My 97 had a "skip" as you mention.
For some reason, didn't throw a code.
Plugs cleared it up for me. But I've got a lot of mods, so this may or may not be your issue...

Approximately $50 for a coil pack.

I was lucky enough to get my Exp to throw a code, but it took me several weeks of trying and finally I was able to get it to throw a code at 75 mph, but the only way I could retreive the code was to drive with the scanner plugged in. For more details do a search of some of my postings around the first of 2006.

It turned out to be my #4 cop. It looked corroded and burnt so I changed it first and now the truck runs fine. (I also have a F250 with a V10 so I stole a cop from it). I must say getting to #4 is a pain in A#$
