I has seen discusions on this site about aftermarket and homemade air kits. I aint so good with the computer and cant figure out how to look old discusions up so... ...whats your opinion? I aint paying $200+ for something I could make for $50-$75, so your ideas or experiences would help me too. I got a '94 f-150 w/5.0/auto. Ohh and mass air.
If I remember correctly, "Cold air" systems only help you when your engine's sucking air way inside the compartment (like in a motorhome) and you'll get 1% improvement in power for every 10 degree delta from ambient over 80 degrees, then again....memory is the second or third thing to go....
To look something up, move your mouse over the "search" up above and then click it. In the box, type in spmething, like "cold air system" without the quotes. Here's one, and note the "are K&N filters worth the money?"
long story short, you can easily make yourself an intake with a little time at home depot and a little research in the K&N catalog. most homegrown intakes will leave everything stock from the MAF to the TB, which is a good idea. most people then either move the filter to a location where it can get cooler (denser) air. or at least somewhere where it won't feel the effects of heatsok too bad. if you want, for now, i'd remove everything from your MAF back (back towards the filter) and start there. maybe just slap a filter on the end of the MAF and see where that takes you for now?
A little while ago I went to order one of these 460 air intake snorkels that is the subject of the thread that Randy ssn linked to, and was told they were discountinued. Called around a bit until I found a dealer that still had one lying around... so ****** them up while you can.
I thought about just gettin a univeral fit K&N and mounting it at the end of the MAF, but what about the IAT sensor that is mounted in the airbox? I like the idea of just gettin one of them snorkels for a 460. I've heard the 4.9 had the same set-up. In fact I used to have a '92 w/4.9 and remember the way it was. Is it the same thing? you'd think the 460 would have something bigger.
DEI makes various insulation products that will help. One of them is a "sleeve" for the air tube(s) from the airbox to the TB. Combine that with rapping the airbox with and insulation tape (thiers, someone elses, doesn't really matter) and get an improvement in the intake temps.
