Hood Hinges - FIXED!

Well, you guys were right. I went down to the local truck yard, and they gave me springs from a 79 Bronco. They are a little shorter and they are bigger around, but now I have to use some pressure to get the hood closed.

I changed them out with a spare safety chain from an old trailer, just put the hook on the end of the spring and pull. Make sure you block the hood open with a piece of pole or something similar first.

Works great! no more scars on the top of my poor old head!

THANKS!

How much do those springs go for? I have the exact same problem and was going to get new or NOS springs but a piece of 2X4 is less expensive.

Hood Hinges - FIXED!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-Dec-02 AT 09:10 PM (EST)]How much do those used springs go for? I have the exact same
problem and was going to get new or NOS springs but a piece
of 2X4 is less expensive. So if the used one aren't too much I may go that route.

Sorry about the double post. Hit "reply with quote" instead of "edit"

They were $25. I got some quotes from yards all over the country on the net (one of those deals where you request a part and they contact the yards). They were anywhere from $19 + 9.75 shipping, to $80. One guy wanted $125 + $15 shipping, when I asked why so expensive, he was selling the hinge assemblies with the springs!

I actually found a local yard that specializes in trucks, and doesn't crush 'em just because they are more than 5 years old. It's one of these old time yards, the "counter" are is filled with coffee cans full of crap that no one knows what it came out of any more. Blocks and trannies rusting by the front door... "So how much do you want for the hinges?" "Oh, how's $25 sound?" I think I'm gonna see these old guys quite a bit...

$125, wow I may be rich. My hinges are getting loose at some of the pivot points. I was going to fix them but then I found a set in my spare parts inventory that appear to be like new.

Yeah, they are pretty proud of those hinges. I suspect that some of the other yards looking for 65 to 90 were also selling the whole hinges.
