changed my starter out the other day, after installing started truck and it started fine. only problem was a high pitch wining or grinding. my question is are there more than one size gears on the starter? starter said out fo a 94 mine is a 92 would or could that matter. any help here sure would be appreciated thanx
Starter should be the same. Was this a "used" starter?
The only thing I could imagine would be if it was used then the bendix reduction gears may be dry or the slide mechanics of the bendix may be dry keeping it from retracting all the way back when it shuts off.
Try removing and lubing/or replacing the bendix and/or lube the slide shaft,

starter was from aoto zone, some how the little wire going to the solenoid on the starter from one on the fenderwell is staying hot. Replaced it same thing. was told I have an open circuit, put a new ignition switch in,SAME thing.after starting i cut the wire going to starter from relay, bendix retracted, noise quit. All good and well, no, had to put wire on the little terminal, for power, everything good, no, altenater not charging. that is my problem now, anytime i hook it up where it is suposed to go it throws the bendix into the flywheel, not good. I'm at a loss can anybody help PLEASE thanx in advance
John
Possible shorted starter relay on the fenderwall? Did you try bypassing the truck wiring and connecting the starter directly to the battery to see if it works properly?
It's not clear to me what you replaced--the selenoid on the starter or the relay?
I don't see what the alternator has to do with it. If it's not charging my first suspect would be the positive battery cable (also check ground connections).
replaced solenoid on starter and on fenderwell.I ran a new wire to the starter to the relay on fender, connected it to the terminal on relay. truck started but the starter stayed engaged. I unhooked that wire , while running and still engaged, starter kicked out away from flywheel. not fixed , but working. I'm going to check the pos cable and grounds next, hopefully come up with something there. Thanx for the input, it never hurts to have another angle, John
First of all the starter relay is mounted on the fender, the starter solenoid is mounted on the starter.
It gets very confusing when folks call the starter relay a solenoid.
I dont have a wiring diagram for a 92, but the ignition switch should be wired to the starter relay on a red/light blue wire which attaches to the starter relay with a rubber boot.
If you remove that wire from the starter relay does it stop cranking??
87 XLT,
no, the wire that energizes the starter solenoid from the relay, that goes with the big power wire to the starter. If I disconnect that one (red), that one clips on the starter solenoid, then it releases the bendix, that part works. But I have too hook that one to the wire with the rubber boot. Starts fine, turns on and off fine, But no altenater. I have been working on that, I may have fried my voltage regulater. Going to dive into that one tomarrow.I beleive that these two problems are just a coincidence. I still have the issue of my starter wiring.

As they say, a picture -or in this case- a GOOD wiring diagram is worth a thousand words. Have you got a GOOD wiring diagram for the start & alternator circuits.
Heres how it should work: When you turn the key to start voltage goes to the starter relay on that rubber boot.
The starter relay closes & sends 12 volts to the starter solenoid on the small red wire.
The solenoid kicks the starter gear into the flywheel & at the same time the contacts to the battery-big red wire-are closed & the engine cranks.
I see that you are OK from the ignition switch to the rubber boot since you are able to turn voltage on & off with the ignition switch.
So the question is why are the contacts in the starter relay apparently stuck closed.
BTW the rubber boot attaches by itself to a terminal on the starter relay.
I realize the rubber boot connects itself I'm just putting my starter solenoid on that connection. I am puzzled about the relay also , I have tried 3 new ones all the same, Pulling my hair out
thanx John
Wires are either hooked up wrong @ the relay or have rubbed thru and are touching each other. Trace back from starter solenoid, that thin wire should only show voltage when the switch is in start mode.Disconnect at relay and see if relay is closed without a start command.
