Turbo Noise?

Hey guys I’m new to this diesel thing and I have question on my 2006 F250 King Ranch with a 6.0 PSD. I’m just about to turn 4K miles with the majority of the mileage pulling my 20’ bassboat. My question concerns what I would describe as a turbo related noise. Once the truck is warmed up sometime when I get off of the accelerator as I approach a red light, then get back on it as the light turns red before coming to a stop, say 30-45mph coasting speed, it sounds to me like the turbo spins up but the turbo PSI gauge doesn’t register a rapid increase. Nor does it feel like the engine is getting the turbo boost. It doesn’t happen every time, just every once in a while. It is very situation dependent but happens mostly when pulling my boat.

Can someone explain what this might be?

"as the light turns red before coming to a stop"

Sorry should read "as the light turns green before coming to a stop"

The turbo is still spooling down from when you let OFF the accelerator when you hit the gas again, so the sudden exhaust pressure again causes it to spool up again. The reason it may not be showing on your gauges is the wastegate. The wastegate is a valve that allows the exhaust to bypass the turbine blades in the turbo. If the boost pressure gets too high, it might mean that the turbine is spinning too quickly, so the wastegate bypasses some of the exhaust around the turbine blades, making them slow down. This could create a "strange" noise that you may not be used to hearing. *shrugs* I don't know A LOT about turbos...just the basics...but I hope this helps! *smiles*

Thanks, what you say makes sense. I'm not the only one wonder what this is all about. Look above a few post titled "Turbo Questions?"

I believe the 6.0 does not use the wastegate turbo design, it has variable veins instead of . ????

Hmmm....I don't know...I'll have to look into that. Like I said, I don't know a lot about turbos...or the trucks, for that matter...I just know the basics of how a turbo works.

m350 is correct. The 6.0 does not use a wastegate. It has the VGT.

It could be that with the variable geometry turbo on your 6.0 that it is spooling the turbo up (which you hear) but not showing on the boost gauge because the vanes have gone to a less efficient position and not producing enough air flow to register a big "boost" on the gauge. After the VGT catches up and the vanes move to more efficient positions you should see and feel the bigger boost but the turbo shouldn't sound much different. I THINK the VGT was designed to do this to keep the turbo spinning so that it eliminates some of the turbo-lag on acceleration but instead you are seeing a little "vane"-lag.

BTW - This is all theoretical. Our 6.0 doesn't have a boost gauge and I've never messed with the VGT at all...and I didn't sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Either explaination makes sense. If I get back off of it and let things sync back up all is fine. I will ask the dealer about it when I take it in for a couple little punch work items in a few weeks. Thanks for the info guys.
