So with this in mind, replacing your compressor wheel with a wicked wheel (someone said they move less air) would be a bad thing?
In short yes. The WW is less efficient and moves less air. That's part of the reason it cures your surge. But, if you've got surge, you obviously need to get rid of it, and the WW is the cheapest option. The ATS housing IMO is the best option, as you can keep your stock wheel.
I have been reading the debate over 3 1/2 and 4 inch down pipes on 4 or 5 inch systems......What size is the factory stock dp and has anyone experimented with the stock dp with any other size system....as in a 4 or 5 inch system....or even merely removing the muffler and retaining the stock system???? Just another question to ponder before spending $500 on a 5 inch system.....Dave
Seriously though. Many people leave the stock system and get the muffler delete pipe. I think it's around $40 or so.
There's a lot of debate as to DP size. Many people feel that it robs the low end power. Except for the few add-on that I have, my tuning is stock and I don't notice.
As for the exhaust, 4" seems to suit most for their trucks. 5" is for the sound. And what a sweet sound it is.
Oh, I believe the stock dp is 3-1/2 " .

Dave, before ordering my 5 inch system, I removed the stock exhaust from right in front of the muffler all the way back. I drove it around for about a week and a half like that. I noticed a very small amount of pickup, and wicked sound what with more pronounced turbo whistle. I gotta tell you, even though it was closer to an open exhaust, it's nothing compared to the 5" I put on. I must assume it's the 4" down pipe because there was no restriction in the stock save the 3.5 downpipe. Now it sounds great, spools quicker, and just looks kicka$$ with that sewer pipe sticking out there. Hope this helps. It's loud enough for me and I got the muffled system.

There has to be a point at which a specific size exhaust no longer matches the rest of the engine. For ex. lets say I added a higher flow air filter and chip with tow mode & 80hp mode. what is the optimal exhaust size I should use? There has to be a cut off point in which the rest of the motor is not modified enough to support a certain size pipe. A air filter mod helps with the restrictions associated with a stock filter but only up to a certain point, then you would have to swap out the entire intake system to see any gains in air flow, and you would only reep the benifits of those gains with more spark, fuel, exhaust, etc...
So based on an engine that is producing 330hp and 600ft lb, what is the best exhaust to run for daily driving and weekend towing??

If you were to have a (example) NAPA 6637 filter for your intake, ccv mod/fix and aih delete, thus clearing as much intake area as you can, that is as much air as that truck would ever need for the chip you mentioned.
As for exhaust, the going theory/findings/estimates are that a 4" with a ff muffler or a straight pipe will probably get rid of as much exhaust gas temperature as the truck could produce with that chip. If you go bigger, say 5", even less egt's. There is the debate over down pipe size but, 4" will be more than needed. The idea is to let everything flow through the engine as easy as possible (zero backflow) and keep the egt's to a minimum.
If you're asking if there is a tuned exhaust for a powerstroke, I'd say no.
There are some people on here with some real monsters. Most of them that I've seen have 4" exhaust.

As far as the "optimum size exhaust for your mods, I can't say because I don't have access to a dyno and it wouldn't have mattered anyway. Once you get on the slippery PMS slope, you can easily grow into a 5" system. I know I haven't felt any low end loss with mine, and it revs much quicker now. JMO

Funny you should ask that about the AIH. I went to order that plug and they wanted $9 for shipping. It's not the price as much as I'm pissed about paying more for shipping than the item. It's a quirk, I guess. I'll hit the plumbing supply. They have the same thing for HVAC applications. I did however order the HPX. I'm stockpiling the mods. I want to do the tank mods too. Since it's my work truck, I have limited time to have it off the road and my busy season is coming up. My workmen's comp went up an additional $4,000/yr. so I'm putting gauges and chip off for a little while. Such is life.
You can also use the oil drain plug off the Cummins motor for an AIH delete plug. Same size and the correct threads. Should be less than $5 at an autoparts store. You could even drill and tap it for a boost gauge connection.
