Sure. It's just a lot more difficult and expensive. As Ford offered front discs as an option on these years, and because the '73-'79 models had standard front discs that bolt right on, it's an easy and cheap swap. Ford never offered rear discs on trucks (in fact, I think they still don't, but that may have changed in the last year or two), and car axles and not direct bolt-ins.
You can have specialty shops like DTS in Warren, Michigan, set up a rear end complete with a posi center section, your choice of gears, heavy duty axles, and disc brakes, all for about $1200, if you have the cash.
There are aftermarket disk kits avaiable. They are usually advertised in the back of car and truck magazines. Incidentally I just bought an '01 F150 SuperCrew and it has four wheel disc brakes.
If you have a 9" rear in your truck, contact www.currieenterprises.com they have a complete 9in kit for rear disc brakes with the parking brake assy for about $400. The kit is the same setup and on a 99 Explorer . Hope this helps.
Is it really worth it since 70-80% of braking is on front? Do the rear disks widen the tread width any? The front conversion from MP widened my tread width at least an inch.
Ford started selling trucks with rear disk brakes in 99......my f250 super duty has them and they are definitely aplus......there are also kits now available for the disc conversion on the d60 rear axles that so many of our 60's and 70's model trucks have under them from TSM....there is also an article with pics of a d60 disc conversion that a guy did on a DODge---google should find it for you....fd
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Dec-02 AT 11:35 AM (EST)]rear discs help a whole bunch, they make it much easier to stop in wet conditions and in a straighter line. while most of the braking is in the front, the rear has a huge effect on how the front does it's job. the swap does not widen the track and i don't know much about the swap you did, but using stock ford discs on the front won't widen the track. go look in the 73-79 forum and see my post on the disc swap (its right at the top right now). i have a link to the dodge swap mentioned here. the swap is sweet and easy. it actually cost me less to swap than to rebuild the original drum brakes! the real cost factor is teh rear calipers but around here there are tons of cads in teh wreckers so i got my cores very cheap. hawkrod
