ford explorer 4x4

i am having trouble deciding which engine i would like to swap in to my explorer its a 95 and i wish to put something that will be good in 4 wheel and in 2 could someone tell me the possibilities i just got it and i want more power thanks.

There's a couple ways you could go with this. You could beef up the current motor. What you would want is pistons from a '90 to '94 Explorer 4.0L, a Comp Cams camshaft, port your heads, and get headers. This will significantly up the horsepower.

Or, you could drop a 302 in there. You'd need a different transmission.

A 351 will fit, but it will be tight.

I would think about a stroker motor, stroke a 302 to a i think its a 347. Plus a deffinate would be fuel injection. A stroker will give you gobs of torque down low for 4 wheelin' and the FI will help when you get into odd angles that would flood a carb.

i was told i could put a 5.0 in? is it true or is there a better way?

A 302 is a 5.0, so yes, you ca put a 5.0 in and that would probably be the easiest way to go if you want a v8, as the explorers came with the 5.0s and parts would be relatively easy to come by i would think.
