67 F-100 Camper Special

My son and I were cruising a few wrecking yards this weekend and we came across a 70 F-250 with a big utility bed on it. On the drivers side was a beautiful tear drop spot light. Were these a factory option? The mount on the outside looks stock (perfect fit and contour to the body) but I am suspicious of the inside where it comes through the dash cover. Thanks.

I believe the factory spotlight wasn't in a teardrop design.

Thanks, guys. I need to take a closer look at the light and see if it has any Ford markings on it. It comes through the the dash the way you describe, LXP and I think it is just missing the grommet/finish washer deal. Dennis, maybe "teardrop" isn't the proper description because it is not a real pronounced teardrop shape. Anyhow, they want $50 for it and I'm thinking that baby would look great on my 67. However, I don't see any holes for it in the dash (I just have a metal dash as I have removed the badly cracked and dried out pad). Guess I have to keep thinking about this one. Thanks.

i don't believe the factory spotlights say ford. i believe they are supplied by unity and the picture dennis posted shows a unity teardrop light. these were offered through the aftermarket by unity and from ford as an accesory with unity being the supplier so they are the same thing in most cases. the only differences may be in the mounting hardware as many people use the universal mounts where the ford unit and the unity kit for a ford will have a bracket that fits the contour of the truck. most late models don't have an interior bracket per se, they just stick out and have a ring that tightens on with a screw and a tab that has a screw into the sheetmetal. not much to look at but it works. in my opinion 50 is a little high as i have never paid more than 20 in a wrecker. also the trucks do not have holes for the light, you need to drill holes with a special long drill bit. there is actually a special installation kit that has a drill bushing in it. you mount the exterior mount where it belongs (the kit usually has a template) and then install the bushing in the mount. once the bushing is installed you use it as a guide for a 15 inch or so drill bit being carefull to make sure it does not walk off center (just take it slow and steady and it is easy to do). i've installed more than my share and have the tools. hawkrod

Thanks for the photo, Dennis and for the excellent comments Hawkrod. The light is one of the ones shown. Maybe they'll take less than $50; this is the only one I've come across though. Thanks again.

i like the idea of the bushing in the mount, and the template for location would have been great too. i used a 12"x3/16" but did it all
freehand then enlarged the holes as required. hence the slight mistake on the left bottom corner of the dash pad. i might have been
a bit over critical of my work. it looks pretty good. i didn't mean to
say the light had an interior bracket because all it has is a bezel and yes it tightens with a small set screw. a guy needs to be careful drilling alright i was off about 3/32" and if you look close you can see the edge of the vinyl. i wish i'd knowen ya about 4 years ago when
i installed mine 'cause i probably wuda takin' ya up on the template
and install kit. thanks anyway. i also appreciate the info about unity
being the oem supplier. after a closer look at mine i see it doesn't
say ford on it. it has a nameplate you can see in the pic dennis posted (now i can see why ya didn't believe the factory lights were teardrop) the piece on the top of the trim ring really is a nameplate
engraved are the words "unity chgo" "model s6" followed by the ford
oval with FoMoCo. thanks for all the help! LXP

i didn't mean to say a nice used spotlight wasn't worth 50, what i was saying was most wreckers would not charge anywhere near that much for one. if it is very clean and correct then i too would go 50 if i needed it but i have sold 4 on e-bay this year and the most i got was 65.00 and if i had paid 50 i would be crying. hawkrod

Got the spot for Christmas! Apparently, my subtle references during the last several weeks paid off. It's in great shape. A little cleaning and brushing and it will be ready. I'll post photos when I get it installed. (hope it works)
