I happened to notice in today's (March 25) newspaper under used trucks that there were 17 various year F350 deisels for sale. Previously I don't think I've ever seen more than a couple. What gives? Is it just fuel fright?
Lot and lots of used low mileage SuperDuty and Chevy diesel rigs in my tri county area on the used lots... I think many of the suburban "gotta have the baddest truck/SUV" owners got trade in fever with the fuel cost being in the $100 range per tank full... they were strictly used for work commuting and grocery getting and at $2.599 to $3.299 per gallon finally it made no sense to own one just for status reasons.... That is about 50~60% of all the trucks around here any way...
If a fellow needed a decent low mileage and already TSB fixed turbo diesel there are bound to be a lot of great deals in the next 24 months... especially as the rest of the 6.0L owners jump ship for the new 6.4L motor....
Neither situation is any good for the v10 owners...why pay $34-$45K for a new V10 and wait for order to be built when there is a plenty of low mileage units on the lot at blue book or below?
below blue book is correct with a v10 .it's been bad mouthed to it's death knowll from dealers not knowing the truth. i asked at the nj state local dealer about a new one and was told we don't want it sell it on your own. but his lot is full of used 6.0's and new ones must have 50 total between them new/used with only 2 or 3 5.4's out of the pile.
for me i'm still thinking about buying a crate mill and sitting on it till my 05 is worn out.
I am in the process of trading in my dodge cummins for a new v10 that I had to order. The dealer argues with me about ordering the v1-..."gas guzzler", "low resale" and on and on...he wanted me to buy one of the PSD trucks that were on his lot....20 or more, but NO v10.
He said he could not sell a v10....so I went to another dealer and ordered the truck with no hassle.
BTW, the first dealer did come up with a used 2003 V10 Lariat...I saw it on Monday and went back on Wednesday to look at it, and it had sold...for a premium price, I'm sure....
Maybe they hate the V10's because they don't come back for service? EVER? or at least, 99% of them don't ...
Think about it - warranty work pays the bills for these dealers. It's in their own self-interest to sell you something that WILL come back.
Maybe they got too high-on-the-horse with all the 6.0 warranty work - gave themselves raises and what-not.
Maybe each and every one of us should write a letter to our dealer stating that we've all heard how "bad" the V10 is but in reality it's more reliable and fuel-sipping than anyone ever expected.
Same thing happend to me, I went to 3 Ford dealers, the first one tried to sell me an V8 that he had on the lot and ask me why would I want a V10, the 2nd was trying to get me outside to check out the SD 6.0 PSD's, the last dealer where I ordered my SD was really great they took the time to make sure that I got exactly what I wanted=o)
They even sent me a Christmas card. By the way I found out the within 250 miles of my house there was no new 2005 V-10's on the lot.
same around me when i ordered. the first 2 dealers were the same you don't want it. this one just over the line in new york i did a internet thing the owner did the sale. when he drove it fill the tank for delivery he was totally amazed and sold many more after mine.
the dealers make very big coin on the psd's and will bad mouth every thing else to sell one. in fact the first dealer i went to said if you want gas you want a ranger or a 150 w a 5.4. i walked right out the door.
The salesman will tell you "it's a no-good motor" because they don't have any in stock.
They're trying to SELL you something that's already on the lot. They don't have any V10's. What do you expect? They're going to LET you order a V10 when they have 50 6.0's and 10 V8's on the lot?
I was lucky and found my '01 V10 on the lot. It had to be a special order that was refused... probably because it couldn't take a plow... They were glad to be rid of it after sitting on the lot, musta been 1.25 years... they immediately dropped below invoice without even dickering...
I haven't seen a single 05-06 V10 on the lot, new or used. I haven't been to any of the big truck dealers lately, but still, you'd think you would see one. I didn't see very many 04 and olders either back when they were new. A used one was even a scarcer commodity. Plenty of PSDs and V8 gas, new and used. Speaks volumes, doesn't it?
When I bought mine from Jeff, I had talked to a few dealers who wanted to know why I was interested in that "gas guzzler." I needed a truck that ran whenever it was asked to. I am using it for business and it is the only one I have. I could not explain to my customers why my new truck was in the shop. I needed a truck that would start every morning, head out quickly, tow a trailer a few miles, stop for a while and do it all over again. Not something I had to worry whether or not if today was the day it wouldn't.
When I sold my 1999 v10,I had not looked around for a replacement. I assumed
that i could find one locally. The dealer could not find one, so i started to panick, did not want a diesel. A day later he found the truck i wanted,i live in
north carolina and the truck was in saint marys pennsylvania. That shows how scarce one of the best engines ford has ever built is heading.
When I bought my '05 last June, the dealer had four 2005 PSDs on their used car lot- plus several '04 models. IMO, the reason we're seeing so many "for sale" signs is because of the 6.0 problems. Heck, some of them seem to have as many miles logged on a flat-bed as they do on the road. Sadly, this also hurts our V10 prices.
As for salesmen trying to push the PSD, they only mention it once. When I finish telling them what I think of diesels (in general) the subject never comes up again. My wife says something about my language and sailors- not sure what she means?
Totally different story around Maine. If you want a diesel, you're gonna pay through the wazoo for it. That's wierd because it's hard to start a diesel at 30 below even with a block heater. 30 below isn't uncommon here in the winter. I know that I bought my Excuriosn for $7k less than a diesel. Same package, same year, same options and milage was within 1k. Super Duties are the same story. I'd love to have a diesel but when it costs more for a used one than it did as an option when it was new, I can't see it!
I have owned 4 SD250's. Two 7.3's, a 6.0, and the 2006 V-10 delivered last week. I must admit I have nothing bad to say about the 7.3, but I LOVE the V-10. Got 12.4 MPG the first tank and 11.9 the second (mixed driving). Both tanks involved pulling a 7x12 single axle trailer. Not bad considering the weight and power. Oh ya, and the BSEG!
I'll offer my take on this. After owning diesel trucks for 11 years it took a real leap of faith to go back to gas, because my memories of gas were a gas guzzling 460 with rather mediocre pulling performance. When I went to my 95 PSD, I was so amazed at the power and the mileage compared to a 460.
It is really hard to believe that a V10 pulls so well and only uses about 20% more fuel than most of the newer diesels. The majority of people are still locked into the past.
Big Block Pigs have tarnished the gas engine forever. Everyone had or new someone with a 4x4 big block with big tires that got 4 MPG around town.
The new Dodge Hemi is another gas guzzling underperformer and yes, this still hurts V10 sales because it is so hard to believe that a Ford V10 with two extra cylinders can give better performance and in a lot of cases better mileage than so many V8 gassers on the road.
We on this forum know what the V10 delivers because we own one.
10 burning,4 turning and Big S*** Eating Grins. If Ford stops making this engine, I do believe this will be my last Ford pickup because I don't ever want a Navistar rattler in anything I drive. Ford makes my truck and they better keep making my engine.
