I have (had), the exact same problem. Brakes work fine, pedal won't return when the engine was running. I was told the Master Cylinder was probably bad....it was not. I called the manufacturer.....their response.........put on a pedal return spring. Well, that irritated me right off....why didn't the kit come with one if it needed one. Either way, I put one on and now it runs fine.

I just used Valspar DP-90 epoxy primer because it has a sealer in it. It only sees summer time driving and is stored indoors all the time. If I redo it, I will probably go with a black paint with a flattener in it.

As to the spring, I made a bracket and bolted it to my floor-board and welded a tab onto my brake lever. I used dual springs. I went and got an assortment of springs, measured the traveling distance on my pedal and then used Hooke's Law to test the springs and determine which spring (or combinations of) that I wanted to use. Sounds technical, but that's what I did.

I can try and get a picture sometime this week if you want. Let me know.

The only welding I did was to weld a tab onto the brake pedal arm itself, the spring had to attach to it somehow and I didn't want to drill a hole in the pedal itself. The bracket on the firewall was just a 1" piece of aluminum angle that I bolted to the floor board, sort of adjacent to the steering column. It was one of the easier things I had to do on this truck. Just make sure your spring doesn't bind, or is so stiff it makes your foot tired holding the pedal down You wouldn't be the first guy to have to add a return spring, I have heard of guys using them on other hot rods too. Make sure the air is out of your brake system and that you are using the proper residual valves. You are using residual pressure valves, right? I probably should have asked this first.
